April Newsletter: Jazz Appreciation Month, DC Emancipation Anniversary, and a new art installation🎷

(WASHINGTON, DC)– Welcome to Black Broadway Travel's April Newsletter! This month is historically noteworthy for Jazz Appreciation Month, and the anniversary of Emancipation Day in Washington DC. "Black Broadway in Washinton, DC" details how "national recording stars like Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Mary Lou Williams and saxophonist Jimmie Lunceford could be seen live at cabarets, supper clubs and jazz joints along the strip."

"The music scene on U Street was like no other, and many of the big-name artists who later participated in the Harlem Renaissance found and honed their talent on Black Broadway's Streets."

​After Decades, the Full African American Civil War Memorial Museum Is Finally Coming​

The long-awaited finished museum is set to open in July in Shaw at Vermont Avenue and U Street.

SAVE THE DATE— THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 13: DC EMANCIPATION DAY ANNIVERSARY PARADE

"With blue skies, a well-dressed procession, ten thousand Black spectators, music, flowers and banners reading 'Lincoln the Liberator', the first annual District of Columbia Emancipation Day Parade commemorated the abolishment of slavery." WHAT: Parade, festival and concert celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the declaration of Emancipation Day as a District holiday.

WHEN: Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 2:00pm

WHERE: Starting point Pennsylvania Ave & 10th St NW, ending point Freedom Plaza.

ABOUT FOUNDER BRIANA THOMAS: Briana Thomas is an accomplished storyteller and historian, using her journalism background and debut book Black Broadway in Washington DC to establish Black Broadway Travel. She is the Arts and Culture Writer for Washingtonian Magazine, and has appeared in Smithsonian Magazine. Briana co-hosts a weekly culture radio segment and writes the monthly travel series "DC Getaway"for WTOP News. She earned a Master of Journalism from the University of Maryland-College Park and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communications from Greensboro College. Briana’s walking tour company has been featured on television networks such as ABC, NBC and CBS. She is the assistant pastor of Light Church in DC.
